Pitcher in the Rye

Oh, what a terrible title for a movie that is! One can just sense the innuendos a mile away! Either way, it's an old school project (High School junior year, English III).

I believe the project had something to do with finding a problem in Holden, from "Catcher in the Rye" (not very hard to do), and present a report on him in the form of an essay, powerpoint, or whatever we could come up with.

If it wasn't obvious enough already, my partner and I decided to go with whatever we could come up with. For one, this saved us the time and effort of actually working on a legitimate project, and was quite entertaining to boot.

When presented to the class (and teacher), she was quite astonished, and otherwise shocked. So, to make a long story short, we got a nice 100 on this project without thinking about it. Twas fun.

On a side note, I also went ahead and uploaded the "Huckleberry Finn" summary animation (which was also made for English III). I believe that one to be of much higher quality, and much more deserving of attention. Then again, the Catcher in the Rye one is so bad that I love it.

Shoe Painting

Well, it sure has been a while. I figured I would update now since I have something worthy of updating with.

Here, I present to you, shoes with Nidorans painted on them:

These were painted, by me, with acrylic paint in the span of one long day, on a pair of Converse high-top shoes. If you can't tell (or just don't know), those creatures are the male and female Nidorans. They are Pokemon.

So, since I sure did enjoy painting these I figured I would try something a little different. Why not try to make a little money from this (and I mean a little)? Here's the deal: If you pay me the cost of a pair shoes and a extra $10 (or perhaps $15), I will paint give you some painted shoes. These shoes can have whatever design you want on them, be whatever brand you want, etc..

So if anybody cares to get some custom painted shoes then perhaps you should email me (ian@wurmy.com), and we can further discuss this.

Of course, I realize that just having one pair of shoes isn't much, so in the near future I think I will make myself a nice pair of shoes. What I am going to paint on them, however, is still a mystery.

So, until next time, do consider this wonderful chance to get a nice pair of shoes!

RTS - Day NaN

So, the RTS ended up being .. canceled in a way. Although I would still like to make it, it will not be done in .. years maybe?

It's not so much that we were not able to complete it in time, but that personal issues made me stop working. So the project has been put to a halt. We will resume work on it within the next coming months (hopefully).

On the upside, the game will feature a lot more.. features that previously thought. We will be able to add more units, maps, etc.. since we don't have a time limit of 30 days anymore. Still, it is sort of sad that I wasn't able to finish.

That is really the only update I have for today. Well, until next time,

Ian.

RTS - Day 3

Or is it day 4? I'm not so sure now.

Anyways, I've started on my journey. None of you know (well, one person does), but I've started working on a small RTS game.

The catch, however, is to finish this RTS within 30-something days (August 6th specifically). If any of you have ventured into game design before, you should realize that RTS games are one of the harder (very much harder) types of games to make. I'm not only talking about the programming side, but the actual design side. Balancing RTS games is never an easy task (kudos Blizzard). It takes lots of time and effort. Time being the key factor here.

Since I only have around 1 month to create this game, I've decided to cut down on many features in regular RTS games and focus on unit combat. Meaning there will be no base building, or mining for resources. All you have to do is create the units, and attack the enemy! This may sound sort of boring, but I would like to keep it this way for a couple of reasons. To me, building a base, and mining for resources in RTS games is sort of a hassle. It's even more of a hassle when you need to create a new base in order to mine resources, because the ones at your base ran out. In these games, it seems like you spend half the time building up the bases and the armies, rather than fighting.

Now, that's not to say there are exceptions to this, but from all of the RTS games I have played, some of the best strategies included defending-until-you-get-a-big-enough-army-to-obliterate-your-opponent. This seems to defeat the whole purpose of strategy (or maybe that's just how I play).

Anywho, what I was trying to say is that this RTS game I'm going to work on is going to be a very simple RTS, focused on unit combat. You will not be able to build bases, only create units and kill other units. That being said, to your surprise, there will not even be more than 12 units in the game (if even that many). However that is more or less because of the time restriction.

Now, you may (or may not) wonder why I've decided to create an RTS game in 30 days. This is because this small RTS game is going to be entered in Microsoft's DreamBuildPlay Challenge/Competition. This competition ends on August 6th, so I don't have much time to spare. Plus it will be fun to see how much I can get done in 30 days, and even if I will be able to finish the game.

So, until August 6th I will be posting updates once or twice a week, for the sake of pushing myself to work on this game. That and it will be fun to update anybody who bothers to read this (:

Well, anywho, I will inform you reader(s) of what exactly is going to happen in this RTS in the next update. Until then, I would like you to know that I've only made a rudimentary level editor. I've got a lot of work ahead of me (:
