July 2, 2009 RTS - Day 3 Or is it day 4? I'm not so sure now. Anyways, I've started on my journey. None of you know (well, one person does), but I've started working on a small RTS game. The catch, however, is to finish this RTS within 30-something days (August 6th specifically). If any of you have ventured into game design before, you should realize that RTS games are one of the harder (very much harder) types of games to make. I'm not only talking about the programming side, but the actual design side. Balancing RTS games is never an easy task (kudos Blizzard). It takes lots of time and effort. Time being the key factor here. Since I only have around 1 month to create this game, I've decided to cut down on many features in regular RTS games and focus on unit combat. Meaning there will be no base building, or mining for resources. All you have to do is create the units, and attack the enemy! This may sound sort of boring, but I would like to keep it this way for a couple of reasons. To me, building a base, and mining for resources in RTS games is sort of a hassle. It's even more of a hassle when you need to create a new base in order to mine resources, because the ones at your base ran out. In these games, it seems like you spend half the time building up the bases and the armies, rather than fighting. Now, that's not to say there are exceptions to this, but from all of the RTS games I have played, some of the best strategies included defending-until-you-get-a-big-enough-army-to-obliterate-your-opponent. This seems to defeat the whole purpose of strategy (or maybe that's just how I play). Anywho, what I was trying to say is that this RTS game I'm going to work on is going to be a very simple RTS, focused on unit combat. You will not be able to build bases, only create units and kill other units. That being said, to your surprise, there will not even be more than 12 units in the game (if even that many). However that is more or less because of the time restriction. Now, you may (or may not) wonder why I've decided to create an RTS game in 30 days. This is because this small RTS game is going to be entered in Microsoft's DreamBuildPlay Challenge/Competition. This competition ends on August 6th, so I don't have much time to spare. Plus it will be fun to see how much I can get done in 30 days, and even if I will be able to finish the game. So, until August 6th I will be posting updates once or twice a week, for the sake of pushing myself to work on this game. That and it will be fun to update anybody who bothers to read this (: Well, anywho, I will inform you reader(s) of what exactly is going to happen in this RTS in the next update. Until then, I would like you to know that I've only made a rudimentary level editor. I've got a lot of work ahead of me (: May 20, 2009 The Fountain of Sticks It sure has been a while, eh? Maybe, maybe not (: Anyways, I uploaded a new game (if you can call it that). It's called "Stick Fountain". It has a very peculiar story to it.. it all started when a friend of mine and I were bored in our Banking & Finance class (go figure). Since the computers had Flash installed, we (read I) created this. A masterpiece among trash, ain't it? Haha, well ok then.. not so much. Anyways, I do have some actual news. If you frequent Newgrounds you may know of the Power of Three event that is going on. As you may have guessed, I am indeed going to participate. My team consists of Nathaniel Milburn and Catacombkid1. Nath is the artist, while Catacombkid1 is the musician. I'm the programmer. It should be great fun (: Also, my friend and I are still working on that XNA game. Although it's still in the planning stages it should come out sometime within the next 12 years. So watch out for it! :) April 18, 2009 Shadow Kar Finally, a new game. It sure has been a while, huh? Soon I'll add two more toons (which I should have added a while ago). Anyways, go play Shadow Kar (: April 5, 2009 Back In The Game For some reason it feels like it's been too long since I've updated the site, even though it hasn't been more than a month. Oh well. Here's some news for you: A friend of mine and I are working on a game. This game will be absolutely amazing (Well, we believe it will be anyways). This game is also a massive project. In fact, it's so massive, that we (read I) decided that instead of making it a Flash game, we will make it an Xbox360 game! Now, this may sound sort of odd at first.. or it may not. The game will be made using XNA, and should be available to the public within the next 12 years. We really don't know when the game will be released (or playable c:) since it's still in the early stages. We'll get er' done eventually thought. In some other news, a small flash game of mine will be hitting the internet within the next week. It's a small one, but it's pretty fun (: >1< [2] Older |
